In a society where education is often shaped for the majority, children with intellectual and developmental disabilities are frequently left behind. But inclusive education is not just a policy — it’s a powerful tool for equity, dignity, and transformation. At Uma Educational and Technical Society (UETS), we believe that every child, regardless of ability, deserves the right to learn, grow, and thrive. Why Inclusive Education Matters Inclusive education doesn’t mean placing children with disabilities in a classroom and hoping for the best. It means designing the classroom to fit every learner’s needs, embracing diversity, and ensuring no child is excluded from opportunity due to disability.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) emphasizes inclusive education as a fundamental right. In India, the National Education Policy 2020 and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act 2016 both affirm this commitment.
What UETS is Doing
UETS implements its special education programs under the banner of Uma Manovikasa Kendram, a group of specialized centers dedicated to the education and rehabilitation of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
UETS operates five special schools (Uma Manovikasa Kendram) across Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry — in Kakinada, Ongole, Tallarevu, and Yanam, Puducherry. These centers are built on the belief that education is a bridge to independence.
Each school follows a holistic, age-appropriate curriculum, focusing on:
Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
Functional Academics (basic language, math, and environment)
Communication and Socialization Skills
Recreational and Creative Activities
Pre-vocational and Vocational Training for students
Early Intervention: Catching Delays Before They Grow
UETS also operates Early Intervention & Rehabilitation Centres under the umbrella of Uma Manovikasa Kendram, with flagship programs in Kakinada, Dhirubhai Ambani Centre at Tallarevu and Yanam, Puducherry. These centers serve children aged 0–6 years with developmental delays, offering services like:
Speech and Language Therapy
Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy
Parent Counseling and Home Training
School Readiness Preparation
Teaching That Understands Every Child
Each child at Uma Manovikasa Kendram benefits from an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) — a customized learning strategy developed by a team of special educators, therapists, and parents.
Building Confidence and Community
Throughout the year, Uma Manovikasa Kendram centers host inclusive cultural events, sports meets, and national celebrations, giving children the chance to display their talents while promoting acceptance and inclusion within the community.
Real Stories, Real Change
Take the story of Manoj, a child with Down Syndrome from a remote village near Kakinada. Before joining Uma Manovikasa Kendram, he had never spoken a full sentence. After two years of early intervention and special education, he now greets visitors, participates in group play, and helps his mother with daily chores. His parents, once hesitant, are now his biggest champions.
