Behind every empowered child with a disability is a teacher who believes in their potential.
India has over 2.6 crore persons with disabilities, and a large number are children who need specialized teaching strategies, therapeutic support, and inclusive classroom environments. Unfortunately, the country faces a serious shortage of trained special educators — especially outside urban areas.
To address this, Uma Educational and Technical Society (UETS) established the Uma College of Special Education, a pioneering teacher training institution that builds the next generation of qualified, compassionate, and field-ready special educators.
Why Special Education Training Matters
Special education is not just about teaching differently — it’s about teaching with deeper understanding, patience, and skill. Children with Intellectual Disabilities, Hearing Impairments, and Multiple Disabilities require:
Customized Instruction
Communication strategies like sign language
Functional academic approaches
Behavioral and emotional support
Adapted learning materials and tools
But without trained teachers, even the best infrastructure fails. That’s where RCI-approved courses come in — and Uma College is at the forefront of delivering them.
About Uma College of Special Education
Uma College of Special Education is operated by UETS and is affiliated to the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). It offers both Diploma (D.Ed.) and Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) programs in Special Education, with specialized streams based on disability categories.
Campus Locations:
Kakinada (Kakinada District)
Eluru (Eluru District)
Courses Offered
All programs include classroom instruction, field exposure, practice teaching at UETS-run schools, and workshops on assistive technology and inclusive education.
Hands-On Learning
What sets Uma College apart is its field immersion model. Trainees don’t just study theory — they work side by side with experienced special educators and therapists at Uma Manovikasa Kendram special schools and Early Intervention Centres.
They learn to:
Design and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
Use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools
Adapt teaching material for different disability needs
Collaborate with parents, counselors, and therapists
Career Pathways After Graduation
Graduates from Uma College of Special Education are eligible for:
Government special education teacher roles
NGO-run schools and early intervention programs
Vocational rehabilitation and inclusive education settings
Further studies in psychology, therapy, or inclusive education policy
With RCI certification, they can work across India.
Voices from the Field
"I always wanted to be a teacher, but I didn’t know there was a path for teaching children with special needs. Uma College changed my life — and now I help change the lives of others."
— Sunitha, B.Ed. Special Education graduate, Eluru
