Assistive Devices, Therapy, and Hope – How UETS is Changing Lives One Step at a Time

For many people with disabilities in India, something as simple as walking, speaking, or holding a pencil can feel impossible without help. But help shouldn’t mean dependency — it should lead to empowerment.

At Uma Educational and Technical Society (UETS), rehabilitation isn’t just about devices or therapy sessions. It’s about restoring dignity, independence, and the belief that every person can thrive.

With a strong presence across Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry, UETS offers a range of free physiotherapy, speech therapy, artificial limbs, and assistive devices through its special schools, Early Intervention Centres, and three District Disability Rehabilitation Centres (DDRCs).

Why Assistive Technology Matters

Assistive devices — from hearing aids to mobility walkers — are not luxuries. They’re essential tools that help individuals:

  • Move independently

  • Communicate with their families

  • Attend school or work

  • Participate actively in society

Our Approach: Rehabilitation for All

Through its integrated Health and Rehabilitation pillar, UETS provides services to children and adults with all types of disabilities

Case Study: Walking Again with Confidence

Srinivas, a 32-year-old fisherman from a coastal village, lost his leg in a boat accident. Unable to work, he faced depression and financial distress. UETS's DDRC team assessed his condition, and within weeks, he received a custom-fitted artificial limb. He’s now back on his feet and has returned to fishing.

"They gave me back my life. Not just my leg." – Srinivas, Kakinada District

Tribal & Rural Outreach

UETS ensures that even the most remote villages are not excluded. Through mobile camps and CBR outreach, assistive devices are delivered to tribal areas such as the ASR District.

Community awareness sessions help families understand how to:

  • Use devices safely

  • Maintain them properly

  • Continue therapy exercises at home

Building Hope Through Partnerships

Many of these services are made possible by collaborations with:

  • District Administrations and the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment

  • CSR donors supporting artificial limb camps and device grants

  • Hospitals and rehabilitation centers for referrals and support
