1. Special School for the Mentally Challenged:

Uma Manovikasa Kendram has been maintaining a special school for the mentally challenged one at Kakinada and another one at Ongole (Prakasham District) in both day & residential care prospects with the financial aid of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India. It has been imparting all kinds of services such as special education, welfare & rehabilitation. Most of the children are taught self-help and academic skills pertaining to classrooms and home based environment and making them functionally independent. The activities of the school were very much sensitive to the individual’s competence, deficit, learning pace, interest and residual capacities to the children with special needs. In order to provide Special Education and other Rehabilitation services to the Mentally Challenged individuals and avoid excessive burden for traveling to the parents, the organization has established its sub centers at Pithapuram and Jaganaikpur. The centers are well equipped with the teaching & Learning Materials and doing well. The following are the number of beneficiaries has been benefiting from the specialized services of the Special School and it sub centers:

Vocational Rehabilitation:

Since the ultimate aim of rehabilitation of mentally challenged persons is to prepare them for meaningful contributory and participatory adult role in the society. The rehabilitation components may include from womb to tomb at all level. In the present trends the economical empowerment plays vital role to make the person meaningful for which vocational components are highly essential. It will help to uplift their living condition, improve socioeconomic conditions etc. It would also ensure social acceptance, dignity and sense of belongingness addressing with the process of appropriate Guidance, Counseling & Training. Keeping this in view this institute has been providing Vocational Rehabilitation Programme in Doormat Making, Office file making, Leaf-plate making, Phenyl Making, Candle and Surf Making as special section under the Special School for the Mentally Challenged, Project with the generosity of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India. A total of 20 Mentally Challenged Persons are getting benefited under this wing.

2. Deafblind / Multisensory Impairment Project:

This institute is developing up special interest in rehabilitating the deafblind / multisensory impaired individual by establishment of a special unit in cooperation with “Sense International (India)” in the special school premises and providing all types of services for their development. There are 13 such individuals admitted under this section. Besides, the special educator also visits the houses of the beneficiaries on every Saturday and provides special guidance, counseling and training to their relatives. Thus total 35 individual with multisensory impairments were benefiting under this wings during the reporting period.

3. SAMARTH (A Centre Based Scheme):

The organization has been implementing “SAMARTH” Programme for the Education, Welfare and Rehabilitation of persons with Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Autism and Multiple Disabilities at its base center, Kakinada with the Generosity of “National Trust” New Delhi. Under this programme we have been imparting specialized services for 30 persons with residential care prospects. This programme has provision for free services and residential cares for 09 such persons who belong to marginal section of society. The organization has also formed local Project Implementation committee which consists, representative from Lions Club, NGO, Caregiver and a parent. The committee has been monitoring the activities and providing regular suggestion for better implementation of the scheme.

4. Early Intervention Centre for the exceptional Children, Kakinada

The nurturing habits during the early childhood of children with at risk or developmentally delayed, through exposures of different measures of rehabilitation services and its experience will play very important role. Therefore, the organization has been maintaining an exclusive early intervention center for exceptional children since the year 2000 in partnership with Nagarjuna Fertilizers & Chemical Limited, Kakinada / Nagrjuna Foundation, Hyderabad. The exclusive center is fully supported by the trained Physiotherapist, Psychologist and Special Educators. At this center the mothers are also trained to be the effective co-therapist. 5. Dhirubhai Ambani Early Intervention & Rehabilitation Centre for the Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities, Tallarevu:

Dhirubhai Ambani Early Intervention & Rehabilitation Centre for the Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities, Tallarevu sponsored by Reliance Industries Ltd under corporate social responsibilities scheme. The center was inaugurated on 28th December 2009 on the eve of birthday celebration of Late Sri Dhirubhai Ambani, founder chairman, Reliance Industries ltd.

6. Workshop for Fabricating & Fittings of Aids & Appliances:

In order to make differently abled persons independent in his / her locomotion, hearing, vision and in other functional activities, this organization has been maintaining an exclusive workshop for fabrication & fittings of aids & appliances at its base center, Kakinada. It has been distributing suitable aids & appliances such as Crutches, Hearing Aids, Calipers, Tricycles, Artificial Limbs & Wheel chairs to the needy persons free of cost.

7. DLI-CBR Programme in Tallarevu Mandal:

Uma Educational & Technical Society, Kakinada has taken up responsibility to promote the rights, respect, dignity and individual autonomy of the persons with different abilities by implementing community based rehabilitation project in Tallarevu Mandal as part of District Level Initiative of CBR Forum, Bangalore. The project was commenced from 1st October 2009. Under the evolved project this institute has identified a total of 1188 persons with disabilities and taking up all the necessary actions to minimize the affect of disabilities by the process of rehabilitation and empower them at the fullest possible extent.

This institute has been also implementing the services for rehabilitation of persons with Mental Illness and providing all sorts of services such as Medicines, Psychological Counselling, and Vocational Rehabilitation etc under the said project. This institute has been providing comprehensive rehabilitation to the 22 persons with mental illness.

8. Phase-II: IED and follow-up CBR programme in U.Kothapalli & Thondangi Mandals

Uma Educational & Technical Society, Kakinada is considering disability as a development issue; hence it is providing services to sensitize the disabled, their parents and community to assume their responsibility towards the persons with different abilities and considering them as an integral part of the society. Keeping this in view the organization is utilizing the philosophy of Community Based Rehabilitation programme and implementing the Phase-II: IED & Follow up CBR services for the persons with disabilities in U.Kothapalli & Thondangi Mandal with the generosity of Andheri-Hilfe-Bonn, Germany. The phase-II project was commenced from 01.07.2008 and it has been executing its services such as Prevention of disability, accesses the Govt. programmes & Policies, intervention focusing towards the skill developments, Vocational training's, Employment opportunities, Referral services, Home visits, follow-up services, suitable Aids & Appliances to the needy, need based interventions, Community awareness, accessibility, and advocating for their rights through advocacy and lobbying within their own community. Secondly it has been also exercising the activities for Building confidence among the disabled, forming self-help Groups /Mandal Level federation for their development. This institute has covered 1891 persons with different abilities of all nature & extent of disabilities. It has also admitted 186 children with different abilities into the normal school and providing all kinds of services for their effective inclusion into the mainstream of education.

9. Inclusive Education for Disabled at Secondary Stage (IEDSS)

Every child with disability will be identified at the secondary level and his educational needs assessed and provide educational opportunities, facilities to students with disabilities in the general education system at the secondary level (classes IX to XII). All general schools teachers at the secondary level will be provided basic training to teach students with disabilities with in a period of three to five years. Students with disabilities will have access to support services like the appointment of special educators, establishment of resource rooms every block.

Therefore, this institute has been implementing the evolved scheme of Ministry of Homan Resource Development, Govt. of India called “Inclusive Education for Disabled at Secondary Stage” (IEDSS) since June 2009. This institute has been implementing the IEDSS scheme in 15 ZP High schools in 07 Mandals of East Godavari District. It provides all kinds of services for education, welfare and rehabilitation of these children based on their needs and makes all efforts to integrate them at all levels.

Modalities of Assessment: Education / Material:

  • The organization has developed special diagnostic assessment record form for over all aspect of assessment of special needs children. Besides this it has been also adopting the special checklist, which was, developed by the various National Institutes and experts in Rehabilitation Field.
  • The Special Teachers has also prepared special teaching and learning material based on the level of function, learning pace, individual capacity and their curriculum.

10. State Nodal Agency Partner of National Trust:

The National Trust has selected this institute to act as State Nodal Agency Partner (SNAP) to implement & monitor the National Trust activities in 10 Districts of Andhra Pradesh namely Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Parkasham, Nellore and Khammam. As a SNAP, this institute has been taking up several activities such as awareness programmes, Parents training, Inclusive Education, Legal Guardianship, training & monitoring of LLCs, NGOs, DPOs etc in the above said districts in Andhra Pradesh.

This organization has taken up various services for the Education, welfare and rehabilitation services for the person with Mental Retardation, Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Multiple Disabilities on behalf of National Trust. This organization has been implementing the Samarth (A center Based Scheme) of National Trust since the year 2006. It has been also acting as State Nodal Agency Partner of National Trust to implement its activities in 10 coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh. This institute has done excellent works under the services and enrolled 11713 individuals under the NIRMAYA Health Insurance Scheme of National Trust. It has also conducted good services to raise the awareness among the public, DPOs, Parents and Panchayati Raj Institute regarding the National Trust activities such as Legal Guardianship and appointed 468 legal guardianships and 702 are under the processing, Local Level Committee, Nirmaya Scheme, Gharoundha Scheme, Aspiration Scheme, Sahayogi Scheme, Arunim scheme etc.

12. Target Intervention Project for Migrant Communities:

This institute has adopted the motto to improve general health of the communities and prevent them from the various communicable diseases such as STD/HIV/AIDS. It has implemented the “Target Intervention Project for Migrants Communities in the East Godavari District since 15th August 2008 with the generosity of NACO/APSACS, Hyderabad. The organization has been implementing this project efficiently and yielding good results according to its aims & objectives. It has been also focusing for care & support to the people living with HIV/AIDS and for their families. Prevention of the causes of HIV/AIDS at all level, access the Govt. programmes & Policies to the people living with HIV/AIDS, such as intervention focusing their promotion of health, skill developments, trainings, employment opportunities, livelihood programme, referral services, follow-up services, community awareness etc. It has identified the following halt points to deliver the effective services for the migrant communities:

  • Coromandal Fertilizer Area (Kakinada Rural)

  • Implementing Mobile clinic in the project areas.
  • Need Based Services by team members which consist of Counselor, Social Worker, Doctor and trained outreach worker.
  • Referring the severely affected/ infected cases at various centers such as GGH, Kakinada for their specialized services.
  • Condom Promotion.
  • Placed 35 Non-Conventional Outlets and 16 Condoms Boxes for stocking and distributing Condoms in the project areas.
  • Generating knowledge about the usages of condoms through special programmes.

  • 39 Peer Educators are committing their services for create genuine and STD/HIV/AIDS free environment.

13. State Nodal NGO for Capacity Enhancement for Census 2011:

This institute has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to act as state level nodal NGO in Andhra Pradesh. It has taken up strong commitment and sole responsibility towards the Capacity Enhancement for Census 2011. In this connection, this institute has been executing its sincere services as per the planner of Census 2011. This institute has translated the Manuals of Instructions for filling up of the House Listing and National Population Register in TELUGU language and submitted to the Directorate of Census Operations, Hyderabad. It has selected 2 National Trainers and 25 Master Trainer Facilitators to enhance the capacity on Census 2011 in all districts of Andhra Pradesh.

In this connection this institute has also conducted Phase – I and Phase – II for Master Trainers Facilitators at State Level. All the MTFs has been also providing training to the Master Trainers at District level and this institute is close monitoring and supervising the activities, guidance and support for the well and effective implementation of the programme in all 23 districts in Andhra Pradesh.

Previous Project:

1. Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities in Urban Areas / IKP-MEPMA

Since the persons with different abilities face challenges on account of normal socio-economic changes as well as their physical and mental conditions. They often start life with little access to opportunities and continue in the same state throughout their lives. Hence, there is a need to promote their rights and provide them equal opportunity to participate fully in the society and enhance their Socio economic conditions & dignity. Keeping this in view, this organization has started implementing “Urban Disabled Empowerment Programme” under IKP-MEPMA project in collaboration with Municipal Corporation, Kakinada, Pithapuram in East Godavari and Markapuram, Kandukuru Municipalities in Prakasham District with an aim to improve quality of life of persons with different abilities by accessing services through self managed organization.

Town Vikalangula Mutually Aided Cooperative Society:

In order to help the persons with different abilities, this organization has formed “The Kakinada Town Vikalangula Mutually Aided Cooperative Society Ltd., Kakinada, East Godavari District” under section 5 of A.P. MACS Act, 1995. A total number of 11 SHGs consisting of 70 persons with disabilities have been enrolled under the society.

2. PATNERSHIPS FOR SEXUAL HEALTH PROJECT

Undoubtedly day-to-day the HIV/AIDS is becoming global challenge. It has been spreading with high pace and with severe impact. Because there is no remedy so far developed. The awareness and appropriate knowledge is the better strategies of its Prevention. In this context the Organization has been implementing the “Partnerships for Sexual Health Project” with the generosity of APSACS, Hyderabad since the year 2000. The project has targeted for Truckers and their families intervention which are considering as more risky person. It has very clear objectives to implement the services for the betterment of vulnerable section of society through Behavior Change Communication, Quality STD Care, Condom Promotion and Enabling Environment among Truckers in Kakinada Rural & Urban areas of East Godavari District, A.P.

3. INTEGRATED EDUCATION DISABLED CHILDREN

As we know that the education is powerful instrument to make the positive changes in attitude of society and often initiate the upward movement in the social structure. Thereby, it is helping to bridge the gab between the special needs children and their normal counterparts. Hence, it is important to build the skills, Knowledge, attitude and abilities to integrate the Differently abled persons into the mainstream of education. Keeping this in view, the organization has been maintaining an integrated education for Disabled Children programme with the generosity of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India and covered 475 differently abled children in 43 Mandal Parishad Primary & Upper Primary Schools in Kajuluru, Karapa, Tallarevu, Kakinada Rural, Samalkota, Pithapuram, Rangampeta, Gandepalli and Jaggampet Mandals of East Godavari District, A. P. India.

4. COMMUNITIY BASED REHABILITATION PROGRAMMES

The East Godavari District is largest district in Andhra Pradesh situated on the bank of Bay of Bengal and is more prone to affect with the cyclonic weather and tidal waves, which affect its entire population. Most of its population belongs to either fisherman community or Agricultural Laborers, who are struggling hard for their square of meals. The prevalence of persons with disabilities is more and most of them are living on miserable conditions. UETS is considering disability as a development issue; hence it is providing services to sensitize the disabled, their parents and community to assume their responsibility towards the persons with disabilities and considering them as an integral part of the society. Keeping this in view the organization is utilizing the philosophy of Community Based Rehabilitation programme and executing its services such as Prevention of disability, access the Go vt. programmes & Policies, intervention focusing towards the skill developments, Vocational training's, Employment opportunities, Referral services, Home visits, follow-up services, suitable Aids & Appliances to the needy, need based interventions, Community awareness, accessibility, and advocating for their rights through advocacy and lobbying within their own community. Secondly it has been also exercising the activities for Building confidence among the disabled, forming self-help Groups /Mandal Level federation for their development in 11 Mandals of East Govari District with support of the various funding agencies.

5. VOCATIONAL TRAINING:

Since the ultimate aim of rehabilitation of persons with disabilities is to prepare them for meaningful contributory and participatory adult role in the society. The rehabilitation components may include from womb to tomb at all level. In the present trends the economical empowerment plays vital role to make the person meaningful for which vocational components are highly essential. It will help to uplift their living condition, improve socioeconomic conditions and re-established their self confidence to move forward to lead their live in more fruitful ways. It would also ensure social acceptance, dignity and sense of belongingness addressing with the process of vocational Rehabilitation. Under this wing the organization has been imparting services such as:

  • Training's in suitable trades
  • Post training supports/ Job Placement etc.
