    FROM THE DIRECTOR'S DESK

Since the ultimate aim of rehabilitation of persons with different abilities is to prepare them for meaningful, contributory and participatory members of the society. In the present context, education and socio-economic empowerment plays a vital role in making their life meaningful for which rights- based approach needs to be exercised. Most of them have been largely ignored or neglected by society or even by their families and living on miserable conditions, although, the Govt. has brought legislations based on the developments at the international level and also due to local lobbying. But the fruits of these legislations are yet to reach the common man.
The Development and human rights are interlinked. The sustainable development is very minimal without respecting the human rights and at the same time, the advancement of human rights are very minimal without development. Development is overall aspects of growth, where as human rights based approach is broadened and includes people’s rights in the context of their society and empowering them to exercise those rights. In regard to disabilities, rights based approach starts with focusing on every person’s potential and their legitimate position in the family, community and society. Still the persons with different abilities are facing particular discrimination and even neglected for their basic rights.

Thus, we should develop strong commitment and provision of services to focus on potential of persons with different abilities and their legitimate position in the family and even in the society. Every human being has right to live, right to work, right to move, and right to participate equally in the community activities. So, disability should not come in his/ her way to achieve their maximum potential. The Uma Educational & Technical Society is executing its services for their education, welfare and rehabilitation programmes and striving hard to bring them as on par with other citizens.
